![]() ![]() A couple of times, I found myself thinking, "Oh, that was good, I wish I'd done that."ĭuring interviews for the film, lead actress Mo'Nique has been a consistent and strong voice that same-sex love is love like any other. They did more with Johnnie/Randy's dreams than I did. But, credit where it's due, there were some things the screenwriters did better than I did. Even as an excuse for Mo'Nique to play a mad-scene in a supermarket, I just don't get it. ![]() But I think I'll go to my grave asking "What the what?" about the "missing little sister" subplot. I'm no stranger to show business: I know if you've got an Oscar-winning actress starring in and co-producing your film, you pad her part. More than the things you mentioned, I was more put off by the way the part of the mother was padded, to take advantage of having Mo'Nique in the role. I made a little mental parlor-game out of picking out the things they actually used from my book. And I was able to enjoy the movie as a movie. But I knew going in that Patrik had made some (big) changes, just from the synopses I'd read in the press releases and such. ![]() I saw the movie at its world premiere at the 2014 Pan African Film Festival here in Los Angeles. ![]() I have? Coates remarks Malcom X's constant "evolution" toward the truth that was "outside the boundaries of his life, his body," and it helped Coates to take "total possession of my body" (Coates, 2015, p. ![]() He also explains his cultural awakening when attending the HBCU (Historically Black Colleges and Universities) Howard University, where he discovers the ideas of Malcolm X.
