A couple of times, I found myself thinking, "Oh, that was good, I wish I'd done that."ĭuring interviews for the film, lead actress Mo'Nique has been a consistent and strong voice that same-sex love is love like any other. They did more with Johnnie/Randy's dreams than I did. But, credit where it's due, there were some things the screenwriters did better than I did. Even as an excuse for Mo'Nique to play a mad-scene in a supermarket, I just don't get it. But I think I'll go to my grave asking "What the what?" about the "missing little sister" subplot. I'm no stranger to show business: I know if you've got an Oscar-winning actress starring in and co-producing your film, you pad her part. More than the things you mentioned, I was more put off by the way the part of the mother was padded, to take advantage of having Mo'Nique in the role. I made a little mental parlor-game out of picking out the things they actually used from my book. And I was able to enjoy the movie as a movie. But I knew going in that Patrik had made some (big) changes, just from the synopses I'd read in the press releases and such. I saw the movie at its world premiere at the 2014 Pan African Film Festival here in Los Angeles. I have? Here I thought I'd been so tasteful about it.
