![]() ![]() Those sources, however, often contradict each other. The love story between the goddess of the moon and a handsome human is pieced together from many sources. One of the issues historians face in putting together the story of Endymion is that no complete telling of the myth survives today. Whether in Greece or Asia Minor, asleep or dead, the stories of Endymion show just how complicated it can be to get to the heart of Greek mythology. Because of his love for the moon goddess he was put into an eternal sleep by Zeus so he would remain ageless and beautiful forever. ![]() What most stories center around, however, is the love shared between Endymion and the Titan goddess of the moon, Selene.ĭespite the many contradictory stories, Endymion is best remembered for being asleep. Some stories paint him as a Greek king, others as a shepherd in Asia Minor, and some as one of the first astronomers. The confusion is also due to the fact that the story was likely pieced together in the first place, taking characters and situations from two different traditions and cultures.Īncient sources do not agree on Endymion’s lineage, his status in the social hierarchy, or even what continent he lived on. The story as we know it today is reconstructed from fragmentary texts and brief mentions. This is, in large part, because no complete narrative of the myth exists. The legend of Endymion in Greek mythology is a complicated and sometimes confusing one. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() His writings influenced a host of English dramatists, including Shakespeare. As a literary form, the essay would not really come into its own until around 1,500 years later, during the Renaissance. He would also prove to be a trailblazer in the field of history, and have a considerable influence on the genre of the essay. His Greek Lives and Roman Lives (of which there are two very good selections by Oxford World’s Classics) show the individual personalities of the great statesmen and cultural figures he discusses, their quirks and foibles, their eccentricities.ģ. ![]() And this is why we at Interesting Literature admire Plutarch so much: he saw the importance of trivia, and the fact that it isn’t always as trivial as it might first appear. ![]() Plutarch loves to home in on an individual story that sheds some light on his subject – an anecdote, a moral tale, a quirk or distinctive character trait. That happened on a worldwide basis in the first half of the 20th century and was especially true in WWII as the West and the East became more interconnected. We are now beginning to see emerge a similar squaring off into alliances. As explained in the WWII example from my book, economic stresses and conflicts (i.e., economic sanctions) between nations can become progressively more intense to the point of being intolerable, which prompts military wars. There are too many dimensions to what is now happening and too many analogous cases of these things having happened in history to cover in any single post, so I will share them bit by bit in a series of posts relating what’s happening today to the patterns of history I describe in my book Principles for Dealing with the Changing World Order. In this post, I want to pass along what I'm seeing about the sides coalescing in a fight for control of the world order. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() In The Magic a great mystery from a sacred text is revealed, and with this knowledge Rhonda Byrne takes the reader on a life-changing journey for 28 days.
